Still on Life Support-The F136 GE/RR

The alternate engine for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF)—the F136 GE Rolls-Royce— is still on life support. For how much longer is anyone’s guess.

  1. It’s interesting how no one talks about $F119 being the solo engine type for F22.

    Turbofan technology has matured enough not to warrant the need for a two-type deal, but of course customer service and potential monopoly (“$5M per engine, take it or leave it!”) are of real concern.

It’s amazing how the “free market” is supposed to solve all ills and excesses when it comes to financial and medical sectors of the economy … but as soon as you start trying to apply the same principles to defense procurement, the “free market” is the absolute LAST thing we can “afford” in warfighting capability. Monopolies rule the defense industries, and that’s how the companies and the congress critters want it.
